Yoga, taking from the sanskrit meaning union is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice originating in India many millennia ago that rose to prominence in the west in the late 20th century. Although it is popular in the West as a physical exercise, it has a meditative and spiritual core.
There are many schools and styles of yoga that are now practiced with some more powerful and physical than others. A common denominator in all forms is the control of muscles and breathing for better posture, increased flexiblity, balance and strength.
Yoga is a form of exercise safe for all ages and fitness levels. It is deemed a safe and effective form of exercise by the NHS and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. The benefits of yoga are wide, varied and not just physical. Regular yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains – including lower back pain – depression, stress and more.
